Meenkara Dam, Palakkad Overview

The Meenkara Dam is one of the reservoirs built under the Gayathri river project. The dam was completed in the year 1964 and is built across the river Meenkara, which is a tributary of the Bharathapuzha river. The earthen dam itself is about 934 meters long, 18.9 meters tall. The dam is used mainly for irrigation purposes, supplied to the whole Palakkad district through a network of canals.

The dam is surrounded by forests and mountains, layering the view with more beauty. It is a great spot for a weekend getaway, or to bike to. It is mainly a picnic spot, with a beautiful view of the Meenkara Dam lake. There are also scenic parks and gardens developed around the facility, along with fish ponds. People also come from the city to buy fresh fish from here. While you’re here, do not forget to drive up till the dam a little before sunset- the view is absolutely spectacular.

Families that live around the dam fish for a living here, along with farming in paddy and coconut plantations, which one can see on the way to the dam.
