Bunraku Theatre, Osaka Overview
Osaka's national theatre for bunraku, the three-man puppet form the city invented, and the only purpose-built venue for it. Check your dates before counting on it: bunraku runs in three-week blocks in only five months of the year, January, April, June, July or August, and November. Book online, and take the English earphone guide, since performances are in archaic Japanese.
Bunraku, or puppet theatre finds its roots in Osaka, as it was originated there over the centuries. This is one of the better ways of getting in touch with Japanese culture. English audio translations and scripts are also available.
