Pompeii, Naples Overview
The ancient city of Pompeii is located in the Campania region, 23 kms from Naples, Italy. The settlement of Campania can be dated back to the 7th century, making it a significant source of Roman-Greek history. Pompeii was first mentioned in 310 BCE; however, in 79 BCE, the entire city was destroyed by a volcanic eruption.
Pompeii now survives in its ruins. The city was excavated in the 18th century marking the history of modern archaeology. Several city gates and monuments have been unearthed, along with hundreds of residential buildings, making Pompeii a must-visit in Naples.
