Located in the Rathaus Tower at Marientplatz is the unique clock called Glockenspiel. With 43 bells ringing in harmony and 32 life-sized figures dancing to it, it has two levels, each recreating two very important chapters in the history of Munich. It retells the story of a time during the plague epidemic.
The clock's upper part retells the story of the most expensive and extravagant weddings in the history of Munich, that of Duke Wilhelm V and Renata of Lorraine. This was a huge affair at the time and its stories are famous till today. They are being spread to the entire world through the Glockenspiel. Its bottom part showcases the famous Schäfflerstanz or Cooper’s dance. This is associated to the time of the horrific plague epidemic in 1517. Many coopers or barrel makers had stepped out on the streets to amuse the citizens who were going through such a tough time. This cultural dance is being kept alive till today. Apart from the main show, a mini-presentation also happens where the Angel of Peace on one side, and a night watchman on the other emerge from below the clock face.
