In the vicinity of the Alte and Neu Pinakothek, stands the Pinakothek der Moderne. The collections here are an overview of fine applied art over the 20th century till recent times.
This Germany's largest modern-art museum built by Stephan Braunfels, whose four storeys are centred on an eye like dome through which natural light filters through the galleries! This striking glass and concrete complex, opened only in 2002 is home to four outstanding collections - art, graphic art, architecture, and design. On display are some exemplary modern classics - works of Picasso, Klee, Dali, Andy Warhol, Dan Flavin. In addition to art, there are representations of applied design from the industrial revoluion to today. The Graphics Collection boasts of art on paper, while the Architecture museum has architectural illustrations, photographs and models. The Pinakothek der Moderne is yet another unique experience, a vivid contrast from its surrounding counterparts.
