Venetian Castle of Milos, Milos Overview

The Venetian Castle of Milos or Plaka Kastro is the main attraction in Plaka, built on the Prophet Elias hill in the 13th century under Venetian rule. It is a one-hour hike from Plaka, the capital region of Milos. Hiking to the top of the beautiful white castle is a must.

The castle does not have many remains of it, but the climb is worth the vistas. Visitors can see a scenic view of Milos island and spot Sarakiniko beach, Plathiena beach, and Firopotomus beach from the top. Two 19th-century whitewashed churches, Panagia Thalassitra and Panagia Korfiatissa, are on the way to the hilltop. Melion sailors also resided in the castle, and the church is devoted to Thalassitra, the patron saint of sailors. The Old Venetian castle was a German fortress during the world war. The Sand Museum and Archaeological museum of Milos is a short walk from the castle.
