Nandgaon, Mathura Overview

Located at a distance of 8 km from Barsana and 50 km from Mathura, Nandgaon is a quaint little town situated at the base of a Nandisvara Hill and which holds immense religious significance. The town is highly revered by Hindu pilgrims as it is believed to be the home of the foster parents of Lord Krishna- Shri Nandji and Yashoda Maiyya. There is also a spacious temple situated atop the hill which is dedicated to Shri Nandji.

Among the several other attractions situated in town, the most popular ones include temples dedicated to Yashoda Nandan, Nritya Gopal, Nand Nandan, Udhav Kyaro and Gopinath etc. In addition to this, there is also a stunning lake called Pan Sarovar which is not only a major tourist attraction but also boasts of utmost peace and tranquility. It is believed that the cattle of Shri Krishna drank water from here. A little away from town, is also the very famous Kokilavan and the temple dedicated to Shanidev.

Places to Visit in Nandgaon

  1. Nanda Bhawan or Nandagram Temple

    Nanda Bhawan, also known as Nandagram Temple is built atop the hillock in the centre of a paved courtyard. Besides being a revered religious spot, the temple also boasts of several panoramic vistas of the township below, which draws a lot of tourists. The temple was built in the 19th century, is enshrined by deities of Krishna and Balaram which have been carved out of black marble. On their left and right are deities of Yashoda and Nandji. Next to Yashoda’s idol is a small idol of Rohini - Lord Balaram’s mother and Revati - Lord Balaram’s wife. And next to Nandji’s idol are two of Lord Krishna’s friends- Sudama and Madhumangala.
  2. Nandisvara Temple

    On the side of Nandagram Temple is a small Nandisvara temple which is enshrined by a Shivalinga called the Nandisvara.
  3. Pavana Sarovar or Pan Sarovar

    Pavana Sarovar, also known as Pan Sarovar is a beautiful lake situated at the base of the Nandisvara Hill. It is not only a serene and tranquil place where people come to relax but also holds religious importance as it was one of Lord Krishna’s favourites lakes. It is believed he was bathed here and his cattle drank water from the same lake.
  4. Charan Pahari

    Charan Pahari is another popular spot in Nandgaon. Situated southwest to Nandgram Temple, Charan Pahari is the place which has the impression of Shri Krishna’s feet. The stones on the nearby hills also have footprints of his friends and cattle which had come here with him.

How to Reach

Nandgaon is situated just 50 kms from Vrindavan. If you are travelling in a public bus, you can take the bus bound for Kosi. From here, you can take a tempo and reach Nandgaon which is just 8 km away from Kosi. There is a special Braja Darsana bus which comes here after Barsana. The bus starts from Vrindavan at 8:00 AM.
