Why the name Gulaba?

The name of the village, Gulaba, is derived from the first Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, Maharaja Gulab Singh, who was also the founder of the Dogra Dynasty. The Maharaja had camped at Gulaba when he was on his way to invade China during his reign in Jammu and Kashmir. The location was named so because it replicates the picturesque beauty of Kashmir with its snow-capped mountain peaks and lush green grasslands. This topography also makes Gulaba a preferred site for adventure and recreational activities.

Activities in Gulaba

Adventure Activities: The natural landscape of Gulaba is apt for adventure activities like Trekking, Paragliding, Hiking, Camping etc. Many people trek in groups from Manali while some trek solo all through the landscape.

Star Gazing: On a clear day, the night skies are a treat for stargazers. One can camp on the grasslands and gaze for hours at the starlit skies and identify the names of the celestial bodies. A perfect activity to bond with kids.

Skiing: The region receives heavy snowfall during winters, and the temperature stays pleasantly cool through summers making it a preferred location for skiing even during April. Equipment required for skiing including warm overcoats is available on rent.

Yak and Horse Riding: About 4 kilometres ahead of Gulaba is the Solang Valley where tourists can go for a Yak or a Horse ride in the ice. These rides cost approximately INR 300 per person and last for about 15 minutes.

Food: Some cafes, restaurants and street food stalls in Gulaba sell local dishes and beverages.  Foodies can take a break from the fun activities to taste the delicious variety of food they serve.

Gulaba Weather & Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Gulaba is between November and February, i.e. during the winter season and between March and April, i.e. during the summer season. During winters, the region is covered with a thick layer of snow making it an ideal location for activities like skiing, ice skating etc. while summer is the best season for adventure/ recreational activities.

How To Reach Gulaba

Gulaba is located in the Pir Panjal mountain range in the Himalayas about 20 kilometres away from Manali. The most preferred mode of public transport here is a hired or private taxi. Those on a tight budget can share a taxi ride from Manali too.
