Penarik is famous for its awe-striking firefly sanctuary. Take an evening or night ride on a boat by the swampy mangrove forests and Sonneratia caseolaris trees, that is locally known as the Berembang to see thousands of fireflies in an unusual harmonious synchronization as they dance among the tall dark trees waving eerily. This lesser-seen view has been linked to the mating behaviour of the fireflies.
