St Mary Basilica, Krakow Overview

Krakow's St. Mary's Basilica is a renowned Gothic church situated on the Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) in Krakow's Old Town. It is a UNESCO world heritage site and is famous for brick gothic architecture and its wooden altarpiece.

The exquisite altarpiece, made by German sculptor Veit Stoss, is one of the church's greatest attractions. The Veit Stoss Altarpiece, also referred to as the High Altarpiece, is the biggest Gothic altarpiece ever made. It depicts moments from Christ's life and has approximately 200 figures. The famous Trumpet Call is one of St. Mary's Basilica's unique visitor attractions. A trumpeter plays a beautiful tune from the upper tower's window every hour. The song abruptly ends in remembrance of a legend from the Middle Ages about a trumpeter who was killed by an arrow while announcing an impending enemy to the city.
