"The Lesser Popular Side of Koh Lanta"

Koh Rok Tourism

Koh Rok and the several other islands that form the Mu Ko Lanta are part of the Mu Koh Lanta National Park which was established in 1990 in Thailand. The park occupies the southern portion of the province of Krabi. Koh Rok is located approximately 30 kilometres to the south of the Koh Lanta Island. It is a tiny island with bare minimum facilities for tourists. Its less-commercialized quality thus draws nature lovers in a considerable number. Its proximity to Koh Lanta and Krabi makes it a great place for a quick getaway.

With absolutely no scope for pubbing, shopping and entertainment, the island attracts less of the crowd that wants to party hard. For snorkelling, Koh Rok is often compared with Koh Phi Phi which is extremely crowded during the tourist season. Thus, Koh Rock is one of the few places in Asia where one can find some amount of solitude. It is best to visit this island over a day trip as there is not much to explore.

Things to Do

One can also spend some time on the white sand beaches, take a long stroll along the coastline, sunbathe or go swimming in the waters. Usually, the Koh Lanta tours cover four islands including Koh Rok. Tourists often go for an economical option and sailing with large groups to exploring these islands. But, if one can stretch the budget, they can rent a long tail boat and arrange for a private tour across the archipelago. Private tours usually give more freedom to alter the itinerary and plan overnight stays. Ko Rok is not much recommended for foodies as there is just one restaurant that serves traditional Thai Food. However, one can find a small but decent menu to serve the purpose in case one is hungry. The seafood, in particular, is recommended. If people are not staying on the island more than a few hours and if it is convenient for them, they can carry some snacks and water along.

Snorkelling at Koh Rok

Most of the people who come to Koh Rok are struck by two major things: The first is the fine white sand which seems to pervade all the way around the island and the second is the world-class snorkelling that’s available here. There are multiple agencies who are there for you to help you swim through the clean water with nothing but proper gear. The corals are beautiful and the myriad of fishes are enough for any person to be left craving a round two. It’s the major activity to do here on this island. Besides that, one can take shade under a palm tree and set up a hammock. Most of the tourists eat their food at the ranger station and when they want to relax, they can always go to a resort or lie down on a hammock.
