Takua Pa Old Town

Takua Pa Old Town, Khao Lak Overview

Once the most significant trading hub in southern Thailand, Takua Pa Old Town is now an important cultural attraction. The region sprawls over five main roads - Thanon Sri Takua Pa, Thanon Udom Tara, Thanon Klan Kaew, Thanon Montri 2, and Thanon Na Mueang. Every Sunday evening, the town’s main road, Thanon Sri Takua Pa, comes alive as a walking street lined by local vendors and food stalls between 04:00 PM and 08:00 PM.

You can walk around exploring the charming neighborhood, have a meal at the iconic Jing Keng Restaurant, and check out the local attractions like Khun Intra Building, Wat Sena Nucharangsan Temple, and Wat Khiri Khet Temple. Do visit the Sunday market and try out the local delicacies cooked in authentic Thai style. You can also hike and kayak through the Little Amazon Mangrove Forest at around THB 500 for 2 hours, have coffee at one of the Kopitiam-style cafes, and visit the Tam Nang Waterfall a few kilometers north of Takua Pa.

As a bustling melting pot of Chinese, Indian, Arab, and many other cultures, the old city of Takua Pa played a crucial role in Thailand’s trade and commerce in the olden days. Chinese immigrants settled here in throngs and also set up mineral and tinning mines. The flavor of that past is still preserved in the Sino-Portuguese architecture and the detailed street art graffiti adorning the walls of the locality.
