Surin Island, Khao Lak Overview

Situated around 60 Km west of Khao Lak and originally a part of the Mu Ko Surin National Park, the Surin Islands (not to be confused with Surin Beach in Phuket) comprises a group of Five Islands. It is most visited by snorkelers, nature lovers, and wildlife photographers hoping to indulge in diving, snorkeling, game fishing, and hiking. Lacking development, it is also a haven for people looking for a quiet refuge.

Known for dense forests with beaches surrounded by corals, all five islands of Surin Islands (Ko Surin Nuea, Ko Surin Tai, Ko Ri, Ko Kai, and Ko Klang) are situated so close to each other, and the water level so shallow at some spots that you can reach these islands on foot. The fun and frolic is something which you get complimentary to the picturesque view of the islands combined with the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea.

Moken Village and Moken People

During your trip to the Surin Islands, you may spot the residential areas of the Moken community, which are also known as Chao Lay or “Sea Gypsies”. Presently, there are three different tribes living on the islands. While interacting with them, you will realize that the Moken people spend most of their time floating away in their boats, called Kabang, from one bay to another, and reside on the beaches only during the monsoon season.

You can also buy souvenirs prepared by them at the island as a memento of your visit to Surin Islands. In case you are a history lover, you may find it fascinating to know that the Moken people do not have a written language of their own, and their history is passed on to the future generations in the form of folklore. You can get some good stories from the Moken people while visiting their villages and interacting with them.

Flora and Fauna

Being part of the Mu Ko Surin National Park, you are sure to get ample opportunities to capture the flora and fauna of the Surin Islands in your cameras. While you can consider yourselves lucky having spotted animals such as the Pigtailed Macaque and the Monitor Lizards, playing with the sea turtles while snorkelling is bound to be an amazing experience. In addition to this, you can also witness a large range of corals present close to the island beaches, smoothly fondled by the water and the fishes now and then.
