Banganun Sultan Ibrahim, Johor Bahru Overview

Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim, popularly known as Sultan Ibrahim Building, is the former state secretariat building in Johor. A perfect epitome of western and Malaysian architecture, it was built in the era of 1936 to 1939. Sultan Ibrahim Building was one of the tallest buildings at the pre-independence time and still regarded as a historical landmark in Johor Bahru.

History of Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim

Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim or Sultan Ibrahim building was inaugurated in 1939 by former ruler of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim, hence the name. Till the 1970s, it was the tallest building in Johor Bahru which was beaten by Merlin tower afterwards. In the battle of Japanese with Singapore Sultanate, Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim was damaged whose marks are still visible on the building. Till 2015, the building was used for the governmental purpose which is being converted to a museum now.

How to Reach Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim?

Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim is accessible via road from Kuala Lumpur, Selangor or Singapore. From Kuala Lumpur, head to Lebuhraya – Selatan highway for a 3 hours ride towards Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim. If you are in the city of Johor Bahru, then the taxi will take 13 minutes to reach Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim via Jalan Yahya Awal. The taxi charges RM 70- RM 80 from Kuala Lumpur and RM 10- RM 15 from Johor Bahru.

Buses 10B, 111, 1B and BET1 are available for Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim. Take either of the buses from different parts of Johor Bahru like Jalan Belibis, Mydin, LHDN etc. to reach JB Sentral bus terminal and board a taxi thereafter for Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim. The entire journey would cost around RM 5- RM 10.
