Bambarakanda Falls, Horton Plains National Park Overview

Bambarakanda Falls, an hour away from the Horton Plains National Park, has the enviable distinction of being the tallest waterfall in the country, and certainly one of the most spectacular in the monsoon.

Bambarakanda Falls plummets down from a height of an enormous 263 metres and is created by the Kuda Oya, a tributary of the Walawe River. Enjoy the sight of the waterfall from the viewing platform, which is reachable by a small hiking trail. One can also visit a few smaller but scenic waterfalls in the vicinity, such as the Lanka Ella Falls, with help from a local guide.

Hike the Devil’s Staircase—Bambarakanda Falls is the start point of a panoramic hiking trail known as the Devil’s Staircase. Enthusiastic hikers can begin the 14-km long and twisting path from the waterfall, pass through lush tea plantations, mountains and valleys, and finally reach the Horton Plains. Alternatively, the hike can commence at the Horton Plains and end at the waterfall.

Bathing at the Falls—Bathing in the stunning pool at the base of the falls is possible during the non-monsoonal months, but is generally considered a tad risky.

The timings of Bambarakanda Falls are from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM. The entry fee to the waterfall is LKR 150 per person.

Best Time To Visit Bambarakanda Falls

The best time to visit Bambarakanda Falls is from March to May when the rainfall is moderate, and visitors can enjoy the sight of the misty falls. Although the view of the waterfall is more breathtaking during the monsoon, which is from October to February, it is generally not considered a safe season for a visit.

The off-season at Bambarakanda Falls is from June to September; at this time, the waterfall is merely a thin stream as the site is relatively drier in these months.
