Fort Jacques et Fort Alexandre, Haiti Overview

Fort Jacques is regarded as one of the oldest structures in Haiti, located on a hilltop of Port au Prince. It is a perfect destination to learn more about Haiti’s journey toward independence and provides a stunning view of the nature around. Travellers can relax in the fort area and arrange a mini picnic in the forest behind the fort. Seating arrangements under the shade of trees are available.

This fort was built just after the independence of Haiti by Alexandre Petion when the then Division General of the Haitian military. It was named after Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the then emperor of Haiti. This fort was constructed within a year, and later, it served as a shield for decades after. Even now, tourists can see some of the cannons used in those times. Fort Jacques is easily accessible from Fermathe, where you can take 40 mins to drive to your destination. From Fermathe, the road is adventurous and is perfect for a hike up to the fort. Due to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, this fort has undergone damages which are now in due course of reconstruction.
