Karnak is the largest ancient religious site still standing anywhere in the world, a temple complex built up over some 2,000 years by successive pharaohs on Luxor's east bank.
The Great Hypostyle Hall, with its forest of massive carved columns, and the Sacred Lake where priests once performed purification rituals are the two sections most worth building time around. Plan on 3 to 4 hours to see it properly, and go at sunrise if you can, before the tour buses arrive from Luxor's hotels.
