Betancuria is the former capital of Fuerteventura, and it lies in a beautiful valley next to a dried up stream. Casa Museo Arquebiologico, the museums, and churches are the major attractions of this historical town. It is also famous for local handicrafts found in Casa Santa Maria.

The former capital of Fuerteventura, Betancuria is an important town because of its religious heritage. The town was founded in the early 15th century, and is home to an outstanding cathedral. Initially built in the Norman Gothic style, the Catedral de Santa Maria de Betancuria was later renovated in the Baroque style during the 17th century. Stepping inside the cathedral provides one with the sense of serenity and calmness and one can enjoy the choir and baptistery of the church. The cathedral also has Mudejar coffered ceiling along with Baroque reredos. There are also some other historic buildings in the town like the Franciscan Convent Church and the Hermitage of San Diego. The Museum of Religious Art must be visited in order to get an overview of the concept of spiritual art.
