Tamshing Lhakhang, Bumthang Overview
Tamshing Lhakhang sits just across the river from Kurjey Lhakhang and is considered Bhutan's most important Nyingma Buddhist monastery, on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list since 2012. Saint Pema Lingpa built it in 1501, and its wall paintings, including depictions of 1,000 Buddhas and the 21 Taras, are among the oldest surviving in the country. The structure has deteriorated over the centuries, which only deepens its pull for scholars and historians. Tamshing Phala Chhoepa, with its sacred masked dances, is held here every autumn.
