St. Stephen's Basilica, Budapest Overview

Located in St. Stephen Square, St. Stephen's Basilica is the largest church in Budapest. Built in the neoclassical style, it is dedicated to St. Stephen, Hungary's first king, and took over five decades to be completed. It houses the mummified right hand of St. Stephen, "the Holy Right Hand".

The hand is kept on the left of the main altar inside an ornate glass cabinet decorated with gold and rubies. The main altar has the statue of St. Stephen built with Carrara marble along with the holy crown held above the head by Gabriel archangel. This Basilica also has a magnificent dome-shaped terrace that offers a panoramic view of Budapest. The St. Stephen's Basilica is intricately designed and is filled with detailed wood carvings and beautiful stained glass windows.

Moreover, the interior is decorated with statues, frescoes, mosaics, and famous works of contemporary artists. The right tower of this Basilica consists of the largest bell in the country which weighs 9 tonnes.
