KUDUMBIGALA MONASTERY, Arugam Bay Overview

It is a 3000 years old monastery built in 246 BC near Arugam Bay, Srilanka. It was built during the time of king Devanampriyatissa. It is hidden in the thick jungle on the Panama - Kumana road. It is completely isolated from other parts of the world and was once used to accommodate Buddhist monks who wanted to get away from the busy cities.

Archaeological studies claim that there are more than 200 caves in the vicinity of Kudumbigala Monastery all with inscribed Brahmi script. Maha Sudharshana Lena is the biggest cave here. Monastery has many giant Buddha statues and mural painting that speaks of the glorious times. The monastery is free to enter, and while here you can climb a peak and enjoy the panoramic view. Also, try to avoid going here during the summer as it gets scorching. It's a beautiful place if you're looking for some nice calm and quiet time.
