Bealey Spur, Arthur's Pass Overview

The Bealey Spur track is a hiking track located in Arthur’s Pass National Park in the Canterbury region. It is a more gradual track compared to other tracks in Arthur’s Pass and you can experience stunning views and good weather. It is popular because it is not as steep as other tracks and doesn’t go above the bush line. This is a 13.4km return track and is considered a moderate to challenging route. It takes about 4.5 hours to complete and is famous for hiking, backpacking and birding.

The track is rocky in places which adds to the atmosphere and you can enjoy sweeping views of the Waimakariri river and surrounding mountains. The Bealey Spur track begins from a small carpark off Highway 73 and is marked by an official Department of Conservation Board. You have to walk about 500m till the start of the trail. You will pass through beautiful forest, wetlands and alpine tussock and will pass a number of spectacular viewpoints of the surrounding valley. The track ends at the Bealey Spur Hut and you have to walk back the same way. It is advisable to pack warm clothes, food and enough water and check the weather forecast beforehand.
