Avalanche Peak, Arthur's Pass Overview

Avalanche Peak Track is one of New Zealand’s most rewarding and challenging hikes located in Arthur’s Pass. The track is in the Southern Alps which is a majestic mountain range and one of the most stunning places in the world. It is short trip from Christchurch and a day hike so leaving early is advisable for sufficient daylight hours. It is a 2.5km one way hike and takes 3-4 hours to complete. It has a steep elevation so 7-8 hours are needed in total to complete the walk.

At 1,833m, Avalanche Peak is the only summit marked by orange poles. It is rated as a moderate track and the ascent is through mountain beech which is the rockier part of the climb. The trailhead is just behind the Visitor’s Centre and quickly gains elevation. Yellow poles mark the second part of the hike and the trail uphill goes through subalpine vegetation and tussock. You can return to Arthur’s Pass Village via the Avalanche Peak track or the easier Scotts Track which is equally well-marked and you can turn it into a loop track. The Scotts Route is more gradual and safer and moves northeast towards Mount Cassidy. You can enjoy great views of the surrounding area, blue skies, waterfalls and chilly weather. When there is snow, it is necessary to have avalanche assessment skills and check the weather before you leave. It is also advisable to carry enough food and water as it is a 1-day trek.
