Khusro Bagh, Allahabad Overview

Lying at Lukarganj, Khusro Bagh is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Allahabad. The walled bracketing of the Khusro Bagh is a stunning remnant of the Mughal architecture.

It houses three sandstone tombs of the Jehangir family; his wife; Shah Begum, his oldest son; Khusrau Mirza and his daughter; Sultan Nithar Begum. Most of the design of the place is credited to Aqa Reza, an artist on Jehangir's court. Landscaped amid an elaborately beautiful garden of guava trees and roses, the Bagh cites intricate carvings and inscriptions on each of the mausoleums.

Architecture of the Khusro Bagh

The elaborately decorated gates of the Khusro Bagh give way to beautifully designed balconies. The entire structure contains only two tombs and one empty mausoleum, which is that of the daughter, Nithar's. Located next to her mother, Sultan Begum's tomb, Nithar's is said to be the most gorgeous artistry of all three tombs.

Sultan Begum's tomb is roofed with a chhatri (a prominent dome-like structure in Indian architecture). While Nithar's mausoleum composes of starry painted ceilings and extensive floral and motif designs. However, Khuro's tomb was the last piece and is not much of an architectural stand-out.

How to Reach Khusro Bagh

Khusro Bagh can be reached via roadways, airways and trains. It is about 3.3 km from the Allahabad city centre and can be reached through a 12 to 15-minute drive. Khusro Bagh is approximately 10 to 12 km from the Prayagraj Airport, which is coverable with a 30-minute drive.

Khusro Bagh is in proximity to the Allahabad Railway Station as well and can be covered with a 10-minute walk. Located just about 5 km from the attraction, the Allahabad bus depot on Sardar Patel Road is also easily accessible with an 11-minute taxi or self-drive.
