Since the fair ground is far away from the city centre & there will be heavy traffic restrictions during the event, so tents are obvious choice to stay because of their proximity.
If you are coming (Read More)for main dates, you should plan for minimum 5-6 days otherwise 2-3 days also OK.
Kumbh Mela is absolutely safe. You can carry your camera or any other expensive belongings without any hesitation.

The next Kumbh Mela in Prayag is in 2019. This is actually not the Maha Kumbh Mela though, which is scheduled to happen on 2025.
