When the rays of the rising sun fall on top of the mountains and make the snow glitter, you will get to know what the canvas looks like once nature starts to paint. The soft orange colour of the sun, the reddish yellow streaks spreading out in the blue sky, highlighting the golden outline of the mountain, looks like all the hues of the colour palette have come into play. Luckily, in Nagarkot, you can wake up to such breathtaking view almost every day.

Settled 2,195 meters above the ground on a ridge is the rural hamlet of Nagarkot. It is situated to the east of Kathmandu and is the second highest peak in the valley. Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Jugal, Rolwaling, Mahalangur and Numbur- these are the 8 Himalayan mountain ranges encircling the village. Due to the panoramic views of snowcapped hills and its mesmerizing setting, Nagarkot has emerged as the most popular destination in Nepal, visited by couples and families alike.

With a wide range of luxurious resorts to choose from, you can watch the daybreak from your balcony as almost all the hotels are brilliantly located to provide a clear view of the gorgeous sunrises. For a more adventurous outing, you can even go camping in the alpine forests and live amidst fluttering butterflies and endemic birds. Whichever way you choose to stay, you will feel a strong connection with nature.

The timing of dawn varies according to seasons. In summers, the sun rises between 5:00 AM to 5:40 AM while during winters, it delays to around 6:30 AM to 7:00 AM. Since the hill station is away from the city, there is less amount of dust and pollution in the air. However, from March till September witness clearer skies and hence, some of the most captivating sunrises.

Lastly, a few tips that may come handy during your visit-
  • Wear windcheaters or clothes that will keep you warm enough since the mornings get a bit chilly at such high altitudes.
  • Hire a local guide since they know the best viewing spots and fastest routes to reach there.
  • Carry plenty of water.
  • Do not attract wild animals by any means.
  • Before leaving, dispose your garbage properly. Help in maintaining the pureness of nature.
