Bagamoyo sits about 67 km up the coast from Dar es Salaam and was once the capital of German East Africa and a major stopover for slave and ivory caravans travelling from Lake Tanganyika to Zanzibar.
The town has been nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for that history, and its colonial-era buildings and art galleries make it an easy day trip from Dar. Lazy Lagoon Island nearby adds snorkelling, and the annual Bagamoyo Arts Festival in September or October is worth timing a visit around.
