Saint Catherine's Monastery was built in 565 AD at the foot of Mount Sinai and is the oldest continuously inhabited monastery in the world, home to a library of ancient manuscripts second in size only to the Vatican's.
Inside is the site said to be the Burning Bush from the Book of Exodus, and most visitors combine a monastery tour with the overnight or pre-dawn hike up Mount Sinai itself. It's a remote site in Egypt's interior, reached from Dahab or Sharm El Sheikh rather than the Nile Valley.
