We all love our cities. As they say, once you’ve had a taste of the city life, it’s tough to adjust anywhere else! Bustling schedules, no time to stop and think, a plethora of choices when it comes to shopping and dining! All of that make up the cosmopolitan lifestyle. However, let’s be honest here. How many times do we wish we could drop everything and run away from the city just for some peace and quiet? Plenty of times, I’m sure!

Moving away from the city does have its perks. The solitude is a blessing after the constant noise you are surrounded by. There’s less pollution, a lot more natural beauty and a chance to explore and find adventure. When you’re away from the city, you can truly bask in your own free time and the clean air, and you can find your true inner self. One can experience through picnics with friends and family. A picnic can be great fun. Packing up food, deciding on a spot, setting up tents – it all sounds so wonderful, doesn’t it?

We’ve rounded up a list of picnic spots near Kolkata that are perfect if you want just to do something fun.
5. Sikip

Courtesy: Wikimedia

No, you didn’t read this wrong. Sikip is an actual place, not to be confused with Sikkim. While it is located in the southern district of Sikkim, it is the perfect spot for camping. Sikip is located right on the banks of the Rangeet River. Needless to say, the view is splendid and makes this a great place for a lazy picnic lunch. Imagine watching the river tumbling past as you munch on a sandwich. It is also rich in adventure, offering up camping and angling activities. The best and the most popular part about camping at Sikip is the water sports. Indulge in some exciting white water rafting here, on the Rangeet River. You won’t regret it! You can finally pitch your tents on the banks of the river and have a wonderful time. Admittedly, it is a little far away from Kolkata, taking about 17 hours if you plan to drive down.
1. Manali, Himachal Pradesh

Source

On the top of our list is none other than Manali, the dream spot for all college gangs, the paradise for those with adventure burning in their hearts and the one perfect stop to find serenity in the beautiful lap of Himalayas. The towering peaks of Rohtang Pass covered in the blanket of snow is a heart stealer any time of the year. During Diwali, it’s just more special because you get to escape the hustles and bustles of the city, the noise of the crackers and deafening chaos of the market. Instead, you get to explore the beautiful alleyways, the old Manali cafes, the rush of trekking and following the map to find new untouched points of the Himachal hills. Spending Diwali in Himachal will be a one of a kind experience that you just cannot miss. There are different ways of reaching Manali from the capital. You can hire your private vehicle or book a bus. There are flights that take you to the land of tranquillity as well.

2. Udaipur, Rajasthan

Source

Diwali is celebrated all across the country with huge grandeur and what better way to witness that other than in the city that bleeds royalty. Udaipur, the lake city, situated in Rajasthan is the perfect place to enjoy your Diwali. The royal palaces, spectacular gardens and beautiful lakes of Udaipur is a treat to the eyes in any month of the year. Diwali is indeed special because the whole city is jewelled with lights, gorgeous decorations and more. You can take a tour to the vivacious Forts that speak of chivalry and bravery. The city palace is a must visit during the festival as it glistens and shines like a bride decorated with dazzling lights, beautiful crafty decorations, and fancy colourful lamps.
10. Kashid beach

With just a 3 hour drive from Mumbai, Kashid is an isolated beach, away from the actual world. The campsites are just 5 km away from the beach and will offer refreshments after you arrive. With standard hygiene, proper bedding and clean environment the place is a rock star. You may visit with your family and let your children build their sand castles, while you ease up your mind. Light your firewood and add some food, you will have the best bonfire ever! Then at night watch the whole galaxy just gazing around. You will just sleep for 5-6 hours, but trust me that would be the best sleep you ever had!

12. Tikona Hill View Camping near Lonavala

Camping for a beginner is a way to enjoy his solitude, but actually, it is pretty much crowded these days, except this one. It crosses the line between imagination and reality for a camper. Tikona hill view camping is closer to Pawna Lake near Kamshet and is an ideal camping and trekking site. You may trek your way up to the fort for seeing the scenic 360 view of the Syadris and the fort. Your guide will walk you through colossal caves, temples, and a massive stone wheel on the top of the fort. After you’re sightseeing, you may end up water tubing or just a simple swim to relax your muscles. While talking to your silence, you might even be lucky to notice some dragonflies around. The actual wildlings could even camp in a cave here; just remember to pack a lot of water to drink and firewood to burn.

That is something you will find near the famous Rajmachi Fort, just 7 km away from Lonavala. The place is quite neat, with mattresses, pillows, solar lights and pretty much everything you need; just don’t forget your toothbrush t home. Once you arrive, you will feel the air striking your forehead as a natural meditation process; you will feel the wet grass and the sky, the dark blue sky limiting your power of sight. Also, the panoramic valley view and a campfire will force you to raise a toast with your fellow campers. If you want something more than just resting in your tent, then waterfall rappelling might just be your getaway ticket. Also, you may tie yourself and glide your way down through flying fox as well.

For the longest time, Indians have learned to associate power, speed and class with a single mean machine – The Royal Enfield! This beast, fondly, the Bullet, has been a symbol of speed and adventure. And travellers resonate with the idea of riding a mighty bullet through the vast landscapes of Ladakh, with a biker jacket and a long ride in tow! So when we first heard whispers of a mighty motorbike that was being built especially to scale the mighty Himalayas, we were glued for the one surprise that travellers have been waiting for – The Himalayan!

Read more about the Enfield Himalayan on this blog - The CEO of Royal Enfield Speaks

You can drool some more over this beauty here: Himalayan Official Page!

The newest baby in town comes stuffed with all those qualities that you’ve probably been wishing for, if you’ve been on a bullet in the mountains. Amazingly suited for an off-road experience, it comes with a larger-than-life 21-inch front wheel, and a body bared to bones, which is as light and powerful as you’d want a dirt bike to be. The fuel tank can hold 15 litres of fuel, which comes to your aid when you do not see any refuelling centers in hundreds of kilometers.

And space, you ask? Its got in-built luggage compartments, where you can stow away jars of fuel and water, which hold the power to bail you out in the remotest of places. The 410 CC engine is as hardy as you’d expect it to be, and the bike can easily traverse rocky streams and difficult terrains.

The prototype has also been tried on city roads, and it would seem that its as amazing on city roads, as on rocky terrains. This beauty is expected to be available February 2nd, 2016 onwards, and the expected on-road price is Rs. 1.75 lakhs.

To speak for its credibility, India’s finest off-road racer, CS Santosh drove it, and he’s all smiles!

Kasol has always been a pit stop for backpackers moving to higher camps. It has shops selling all sorts of trekking essentials and knick knacks. A large number of Israelis and Indians call Kasol their home for a greater part of the year, migrating to Goa during the winters.

About the Place: Kasol is situated in the Parvati valley and is a stones throwaway from Manikaran, the famed gurudwara with hot water springs. It has a lot of little hotels which stock a lot of world cuisine. You meet a lot of backpackers who are always ready to share their travel stories.

There is a bridge which separates Kasol and new Kasol. The rickety bridge also offers a breathtaking view of the snow clad mighty Himalayas. There is a tiny hot water spring next to bridge.

Things to do: Pick the essentials for the trek ahead and chill out along the Parvati River.

How to get there: Kasol is easily accessible throughout the year. The fastest way to reach it would be via Mandi, taking a local bus or flying down to Bhunter and then taking the local bus. The bus journey can be a little scary for the faint hearted, but the view more than compensates for it.

Here are a few tips for fellow budget travelers:

Walk around and check out the place before you decide where to stay. You don’t want to waste your money on a fancy hotel when Mother Nature is offering her best to you!

Talk! Talk! And talk to the travelers. They have the best tips to offer.

Be willing to try out the various cuisines on hand, instead of sticking out to the tried and tested food!

Travel light! Kasol is a small place and is best explored on foot. You don’t want to be walking around with a heavy load on your back.

Bhangarh Fort in Rajasthan

Located at the border of the Sariska Tiger Reserve in the Alwar district of Rajasthan, Bhangarh Fort is a 17th-century fort, infamous all over India for being the “Most haunted place in India“. Because of the numerous ghostly experiences and happenings in the fort premises, villages have sprung up far away from the fort, due to the fear of what lies within. Even the Archaeological Survey of India or the ASI has forbidden the locals and tourists from entering the fort at night. This completely ruined, haunted fort of Bhangarh does have a very eerie, negative aura to it. Several legends have attested to the paranormal happenings inside the fort.

Bhangarh Fort History

The history of the fort dates back to centuries. Built in the 17th Century in Rajasthan, the Bhangarh fort is an ancient specimen. It was believed to have been erected by Man Singh I, one of the Navratnas of Akbar’s court for his son Madho Singh I.

There are always two sides of the story of the Bhangarh Fort, haunted for generations. Let me relate the story first. The two sides can wait for some time.

Bhangarh’s principal palace (Source)

Bhangarh Fort Haunted Stories

Coming back to the dual facets- there are two stories still surviving in the form of legends, which have tried to give a meaning to the eerie atmosphere which surrounds the haunted fort of Bhangarh.

Haunted Story 1: A Place Lost in the Shade

The first legend claims that a king named Madho Singh raised the Bhangarh fort after obtaining due permission from an ascetic named Bala Nath who lived there; having agreed to a condition which said that the shadow of the fort must never fall upon the home of the ascetic. But as fate would have it, one of the ambitious successors of Madho Singh added to the fortifications vertically, thereby causing its ominous shadow to engulf the abode of the ascetic. Lo and Behold, once it came to pass, the fort was doomed within no time. The alleged prophecy stood fulfilled, and the Bhangarh Fort became haunted.

Haunted Story 1: A Place Caught in a Limbo

A second legend behind the Bhangarh Fort haunted, more popular than the first one, claims that Princess Ratnavati of Bhangarh was responsible for the apocalyptic situation which befell the fort. A local black magician fell in love with her (the princess is believed to have been very beautiful) and once tried to bewitch a cosmetic she was supposed to use, to make her fall in love with him. The princess smelled suspicion and foiled the entire conspiracy of the black magician by pouring the bewitched cosmetic over a massive stone boulder, which then supposedly crushed the ‘tantrik’ to death. Before the magician breathed his last, he placed a curse upon the entire landscape that no soul would ever be able to live in peace there. The entire landscape around the Bhangarh Fort has been haunted since.

Ruins of Bhangarh town (Source)

Legends of the Haunted Bhangarh Fort

Ruins of the Bhangarh fort (Source)

The Bhangarh Fort haunted is like other forts in Rajasthan, and is surprisingly well preserved. Its ramparts and fortifications stand amidst the ruins of the ghost town by the same name. Legends have it that the fort and the surrounding establishments around it once buzzed with life. Then something happened along with a chain of other unfortunate incidents which led to the doom of the place within a very short span of time.

A ruined palace within the fort (Source)

Bhangarh Fort at Night

No one is allowed to enter the fort after sunset or before sunrise. The entire landscape is subsumed by a pall of gloom and a chilling hollowness once the last ray of sunlight bids adieu until its arrival the next morning. There are many local tales about the paranormal activities in the fort. It totally depends on a person whether he would believe it or not. It is said that the spirits roam in Bhangarh fort at night and various strange noises are heard. Also as it is said, anyone who enters the fort at night would not be able to return in the morning.

One constantly feels as if their movements are being watched, and the air is charged with a dizzying heaviness. A board put up by the Archaeological Survey of India cautions the visitors not to venture within the premises of the fort during the dark hours.

Bhangarh Fort at night (Source)

The haunted fort of Bhangarh has had several stories associated with it. Believing on of them is akin to believing that the fort indeed is haunted, and this is a tale that has been in circulation for years. There is evidence to support the claim of those who say that those tried their luck either went missing or weren’t able to explain anything coherently. You might say that the entire episodes were mere figments of imagination by ruminating minds, but the fact remains a fact.

The Brighter Side

The fort is situated at the edge of a lusciously green expanse of Sariska Tiger Reserve between Alwar and Jaipur, and is not very far away from Delhi either. The fort was clearly modelled upon the medieval city of Shahjahanabad, with four massive wooden gates in every direction. The precincts of the fort have ornately carved a miniature waterfall and temples which lend an air of tranquillity to the place during the better part of the day. The remnants of some palaces within the fort are clear indicators of the fort’s prosperity during its heydey. The fort would have been a tourist hotspot for its serene atmosphere during the day and the architectural marvel that the fort is, and as a matter of fact, it is. It is a tourist attraction and it does attract hordes of tourists during the day, but for all the wrong reasons. Local folks would have you believe that no one dares to build a house with a roof in the vicinity of the fort. The roof collapses shortly after being built.

P.S: I do not have a penchant for dramatics, but while I was writing this post on Bhangarh Fort, the electricity decided to play truant. The icing on the cake was added by a fiercely blowing wind that almost shattered the windowpanes of my flat, and left me wondering. Coincidence, was it? Related Posts:
