If you want some peace and quiet, Baranti is an ideal pick. It lies in the beautiful Rahr countryside and offers a stunning view of the reservoir. You can pack up a picnic hamper and set off to Baranti, where you can eat and revel in the gorgeous view and the peaceful atmosphere. There will be no one to disturb you, for sure! Baranti is also dotted with a couple of verdant hills that you can try and scale, provided you have the right equipment for it. There is a road packed with red mud that you can walk on. You could even opt to stroll alongside the dense forest at one end casually. In a nutshell, there’s a lot you can do if you set up camp at Baranti! Driving down from Kolkata will take you about 5 to 6 hours.

2. Ayodhya Pahar

Located in the famous Purulia district, Ayodhya Pahar or the Ayodhya hills, are also a great spot for picnic purposes. It’s a good 700 m above sea level, so you can just imagine how pure and beautiful the air up there will be! There are sparkling freshwater streams and springs here, so you know where to set up your tents when you get there! The best activities to indulge in here are rock climbing and mountaineering. The road that traces up the hill, which you can climb, offers a fantastic view, so you’d better have your cameras ready! To get here from Kolkata, you can take the Lalmati Express, Howrah Chakradharpur Express or the Howrah-Ranchi Intercity Express. All of these will get you to Barabhum, which will get you to the village of Baghmundi and the Ayodhya Hills.

3. Susunia

Susunia is truly natural beauty at its best. It is a hill that is located in the southern part of West Bengal. Susunia boasts of a beautiful holy spring, some rare flowers and a lot of rock faces that are ideal for mountaineering. If you want a beautiful trek, Susunia is your solution. It also offers up rock climbing opportunities, which you really should not miss. What’s more, this place is also a hotbed of archaeological finds, with carved monoliths and fossil remains aplenty! To get here from Kolkata, roads are the best option. It will take you about 4 hours to drive down to Susunia.

4. Gajaburu

Gajaburu Hills are the next best thing to paradise, for rock climbers. The Gajaburu slopes are hard, rough and tough which will provide a welcome challenge to tourists looking for a spot of thrill and adventure while camping or picnic. There is also a nature camp organised here, which will show you how beautiful the surrounding areas of Gajaburu are.  If you plan to drive down from Kolkata, it will take you a good 7 hours, from Durgapur to Raghunathpur road.

 5. Sikip

No, you didn’t read this wrong. Sikip is an actual place, not to be confused with Sikkim. While it is located in the southern district of Sikkim, it is the perfect spot for camping. Sikip is located right on the banks of the Rangeet River. Needless to say, the view is splendid and makes this a great place for a lazy picnic lunch. Imagine watching the river tumbling past as you munch on a sandwich. It is also rich in adventure, offering up camping and angling activities. The best and the most popular part about camping at Sikip is the water sports. Indulge in some exciting white water rafting here, on the Rangeet River. You won’t regret it! You can finally pitch your tents on the banks of the river and have a wonderful time. Admittedly, it is a little far away from Kolkata, taking about 17 hours if you plan to drive down. But you could also fly down in an hour’s time and land at Bagdogra airport. From there, you can arrange for a private vehicle to take you to Sikip.

6. Rocky Island

This beautiful place is located in the Samsing hills. With the Murty river gushing past, the wonderfully coloured and speckled hills bordering the horizon and the lush greenery around, there is no campsite better than Rocky Island! True to its name, there are a lot of rock faces here where you can put your rock climbing skills to the test — Neel Kanta, Bhimsen and Pathar Kailas are just a few of them. There is also an interesting old cave by the Riverside that you can explore to your heart’s content after you’ve practised rock climbing! You can trek to nearby places like Jhandidara, Sherpagaon and more and satisfy your wanderlust. Driving here from Kolkata takes 14 hours, so you can always plan a couple of stops along the way, preferably overnight ones. Alternately, you can even take a train from Howrah to Jalpaiguri and a taxi from Jalpaiguri to Samsing.

7. Sundarban Tiger Camp

Want to enjoy the best that nature has to offer and also spot a couple of royal tigers if you’re lucky? Well, the area around Sundarban Tiger Camp is perfect for all of that and more. You can go to the Bonnie Camp Watch Tower and spend a night there. The view from these tallest watchtowers is splendid, to say the least. There is also a pond here, which is frequented by several animals and you can spot them if you’re quiet and hide well. Alternately, you could just check into Sundarban Tiger Camp or Sundarban Jungle Camp, drop your bags there and stroll around the area. Work yourself an appetite by exploring the vast campgrounds and get ready to have a thrilling experience!

8. Bawali

If you wish to spend a day or two in serenity, then Bawali is your place. Located in Budge Budge, this census town provides a host of options for your leisure and recreation. You can choose to spend some time in the royalty of  Bawali Rajbari or opt to go on a picnic with your gang- Bawali farmhouse is at your disposal. Bawali is also surrounded by a number of places of tourist interest, like Raypur riverside, Achipur, Boro Kachari Mandir, Navratna Gopinath Mandir- all within 10 km. To spend the weekend in leisure, you can simply choose to go fishing or take long walks through the villages. Bawali is just 35 km from Kolkata. Hence, you can conveniently take the road. Babur haat is the perfect weekend destination for you and your loved ones if you do wish to take a break from the hectic city life and spend some time close to rustic Bengali rural life. Dominated by natural fishing lakes or bheris, responsible for producing some of the tastiest fish in West Bengal, Babur Haat is a nature paradise. Long stretches rice farmlands, vegetable orchards, mango groves, palm groves and rural homes and temples make a wonderful scenic landscape. Fishing is one of the more popular activities in Babur Haat. Also known as Kingfisher island, this little known day trip destination is situated in the middle of river Ichamati, with India on one side and Bangladesh on the other. You can arrange for a picnic, take a boat ride and go swimming in the river. Try not to miss the awe-striking view of the setting sun on river Ichamati. Situated on the confluence of rivers Hooghly, Rupnarayan and Damodar, Gadiara is another nice weekend destination. Kasol has always been a pit stop for backpackers moving to higher camps. It has shops selling all sorts of trekking essentials and knick knacks. A large number of Israelis and  Indians call Kasol their home for a greater part of the year, migrating to Goa during the winters.

About the Place: Kasol is situated in the Parvati valley and is a stones throwaway from Manikaran, the famed gurudwara with hot water springs. It has a lot of little hotels which stock a lot of world cuisine. You meet a lot of backpackers who are always ready to share their travel stories.

There is a bridge which separates Kasol and new Kasol. The rickety bridge also offers a breathtaking view of the snow clad mighty Himalayas. There is a tiny hot water spring next to bridge.

Things to do: Pick the essentials for the trek ahead and chill out along the Parvati River.

How to get there: Kasol is easily accessible throughout the year. The fastest way to reach it would be via Mandi, taking a local bus or flying down to Bhunter and then taking the local bus. The bus journey can be a little scary for the faint hearted, but the view more than compensates for it.

Here are a few tips for fellow budget travelers:

1. Walk around and check out the place before you decide where to stay. You don’t want to waste your money on a fancy hotel when Mother Nature is offering her best to you!
2. Talk! Talk! And talk to the travelers. They have the best tips to offer.
3. Be willing to try out the various cuisines on hand, instead of sticking out to the tried and tested food!
4. Travel light! Kasol is a small place and is best explored on foot. You don’t want to be walking around with a heavy load on your back.

Bhangarh Fort in Rajasthan

Located at the border of the Sariska Tiger Reserve in the Alwar district of Rajasthan, Bhangarh Fort is a 17th-century fort, infamous all over India for being the “Most haunted place in India“. Because of the numerous ghostly experiences and happenings in the fort premises, villages have sprung up far away from the fort, due to the fear of what lies within. Even the Archaeological Survey of India or the ASI has forbidden the locals and tourists from entering the fort at night. This completely ruined, haunted fort of Bhangarh does have a very eerie, negative aura to it. Several legends have attested to the paranormal happenings inside the fort.

Bhangarh Fort History

The history of the fort dates back to centuries. Built in the 17th Century in Rajasthan, the Bhangarh fort is an ancient specimen. It was believed to have been erected by Man Singh I, one of the Navratnas of Akbar’s court for his son Madho Singh I.

There are always two sides of the story of the Bhangarh Fort, haunted for generations. Let me relate the story first. The two sides can wait for some time.

Bhangarh Fort Haunted Stories

Coming back to the dual facets- there are two stories still surviving in the form of legends, which have tried to give a meaning to the eerie atmosphere which surrounds the haunted fort of Bhangarh.

Haunted Story 1: A Place Lost in the Shade

The first legend claims that a king named Madho Singh raised the Bhangarh fort after obtaining due permission from an ascetic named Bala Nath who lived there; having agreed to a condition which said that the shadow of the fort must never fall upon the home of the ascetic. But as fate would have it, one of the ambitious successors of Madho Singh added to the fortifications vertically, thereby causing its ominous shadow to engulf the abode of the ascetic. Lo and Behold, once it came to pass, the fort was doomed within no time. The alleged prophecy stood fulfilled, and the Bhangarh Fort became haunted.

Haunted Story 1: A Place Caught in a Limbo

A second legend behind the Bhangarh Fort haunted, more popular than the first one, claims that Princess Ratnavati of Bhangarh was responsible for the apocalyptic situation which befell the fort. A local black magician fell in love with her (the princess is believed to have been very beautiful) and once tried to bewitch a cosmetic she was supposed to use, to make her fall in love with him. The princess smelled suspicion and foiled the entire conspiracy of the black magician by pouring the bewitched cosmetic over a massive stone boulder, which then supposedly crushed the ‘tantrik’ to death. Before the magician breathed his last, he placed a curse upon the entire landscape that no soul would ever be able to live in peace there. The entire landscape around the Bhangarh Fort has been haunted since.

The Bhangarh Fort haunted is like other forts in Rajasthan, and is surprisingly well preserved. Its ramparts and fortifications stand amidst the ruins of the ghost town by the same name. Legends have it that the fort and the surrounding establishments around it once buzzed with life. Then something happened along with a chain of other unfortunate incidents which led to the doom of the place within a very short span of time.

Bhangarh Fort at Night

No one is allowed to enter the fort after sunset or before sunrise. The entire landscape is subsumed by a pall of gloom and a chilling hollowness once the last ray of sunlight bids adieu until its arrival the next morning. There are many local tales about the paranormal activities in the fort. It totally depends on a person whether he would believe it or not. It is said that the spirits roam in Bhangarh fort at night and various strange noises are heard. Also as it is said, anyone who enters the fort at night would not be able to return in the morning.

One constantly feels as if their movements are being watched, and the air is charged with a dizzying heaviness. A board put up by the Archaeological Survey of India cautions the visitors not to venture within the premises of the fort during the dark hours.

The haunted fort of Bhangarh has had several stories associated with it. Believing on of them is akin to believing that the fort indeed is haunted, and this is a tale that has been in circulation for years. There is evidence to support the claim of those who say that those tried their luck either went missing or weren’t able to explain anything coherently. You might say that the entire episodes were mere figments of imagination by ruminating minds, but the fact remains a fact.

The Brighter Side

The fort is situated at the edge of a lusciously green expanse of Sariska Tiger Reserve between Alwar and Jaipur, and is not very far away from Delhi either. The fort was clearly modelled upon the medieval city of Shahjahanabad, with four massive wooden gates in every direction. The precincts of the fort have ornately carved a miniature waterfall and temples which lend an air of tranquillity to the place during the better part of the day. The remnants of some palaces within the fort are clear indicators of the fort’s prosperity during its heydey. The fort would have been a tourist hotspot for its serene atmosphere during the day and the architectural marvel that the fort is, and as a matter of fact, it is. It is a tourist attraction and it does attract hordes of tourists during the day, but for all the wrong reasons. Local folks would have you believe that no one dares to build a house with a roof in the vicinity of the fort. The roof collapses shortly after being built.

How To Reach

Bhangarh Fort From Alwar

The nearest town to Bhangarh is Alwar in Rajasthan. The distance from Alwar to Bhangarh is about 90 Km, for which taxis and buses are available from Alwar. Alwar Tourism

Bhangarh Fort From Delhi

Bhangarh is located around 269 km from Delhi via Neemrana route and 242 km via Alwar route. Alwar route, even though shorter takes slightly longer time because of the road conditions. From Delhi, one should take the NH8 route and head straight and continue even after Neemrana and take the NH11A. Drive on NH11A for around 50 km and then take the Rajasthan State Highway SH 55 for another 20 km to reach the destination. Overall, Bhangarh takes about 4 to 5 hours of driving from Delhi. On return, you can come via Alwar and stay back there. Explore the Sariska Tiger Reserve and Alwar Fort on the next day and be back in Delhi by evening. Delhi Tourism

Bhangarh Fort From Jaipur

Bhangarh Fort is just 83 km from Jaipur and it’s a good place to go for a day trip with friends. Take the NH11 and continue onto Agra Road. From Dausa, take the NH11A and continue for about 15km. From there, take the SH 55 and you can reach the destination. Overall, it won’t take you more than 2 hours from Jaipur to reach Bhangarh Fort. It will be a totally fun trip knowing the haunted stories of Bhangarh. Try to talk to locals and see if they can recite the haunted story in Hindi.

P.S: I do not have a penchant for dramatics, but while I was writing this post on Bhangarh Fort, the electricity decided to play truant.
