Bharatpur National Park, Bharatpur Overview

Now known as the Keoladeo National Park, Bharatpur National Park is a famous avifauna sanctuary and a bird watching paradise listed among UNESCO's World Heritage sites. The 29 km reserve is locally known as Ghana and is a mosaic of dry grasslands, woodlands, woodland swamps, and wetlands. These diverse habitats are home to 366 bird species, 379 floral species, 50 species of fish, 13 species of snakes, 5 species of lizards, 7 amphibian species,7 turtle species, and a variety of other invertebrates. Every year thousands of migratory waterfowl visit the park for winter breeding.

The sanctuary is one of the richest bird areas in the world. It is a human-made establishment known for nesting of its resident birds and visiting migratory birds including water birds. What is interesting note is that this place was once the waterfowl hunting ground for the royalty and the British, but was converted into an asylum for birds and other wildlife as well in the year 1971. You can take a Jeep Ride or Rickshaw Safari to spot exotic birds and a few animals that inhabit the jungle as well. Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is easily a bird lover's paradise, and photographers will find this place to be delightful as well.

History of Keoladeo National Park

This park exists from almost 250 years and was once used as a hunting ground by the Maharajas and duck-shoots were conducted in the honour of British viceroys in the late 1850s. On 13 March 1976, the area was made a bird sanctuary and hunting was prohibited. On 10 March 1982, it was made a national park. The Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, also known as Keoladeo National Park, was declared a World Heritage Site in 1985 by UNESCO. Grazing of village cattle was banned in this area in 1982 because the entire forest comes under the Rajasthan Forest Act 1953 causing discontentment to local farmers and leading to many problems between them and the government. After the initial resentment, thearea is now a popular tourist hotspot in addition to being an important ecological resource.

Flora and Fauna in Bharatpur National Park

Located amidst a semi-arid terrain, the park is an oasis of artificially maintained marshes, tropical and deciduous forests, grasslands and shrubs. While it is mostly famous for birds, it also houses a rich variety of other animals such as 27 mammalian species, 43 types of fish, various reptiles and larger animals. Owing to a large number of marshes and other water bodies within the precincts, the park has a huge variety of waterfowl, both resident as well as migratory. The park hosts over 370 bird species and is the only regular migration ground for the endangered Siberian Cranes in India. Some of the birds here include Cranes, Pelicans, Geese, Ducks, Eagles, Hawks, Shanks, Stints, Wagtails, Warblers, Wheatears, Flycatchers, Buntings, Larks and Pipits. On the other hand, vegetation here includes jamun, babul, kadam, babul, ber, kair, piloo and kandi.

I went to Bharatpur in January. The best time to visit the national park is in the morning. We left at 7am and were able to see a lot of birds. Since the national park is widely spread, take a bicycl (Read More)e or a rickshaw for the tour. The rickshaw pullers act as perfect guides for a mere pittance.
