Old Fort of Zanzibar, Zanzibar Overview

The Old Fort of Zanzibar is one of the oldest buildings in Stone Town in Zanzibar. The historical fort's courtyard now hosts curio shops selling tinga-tinga paintings, an open-air amphitheatre for dance and music shows, a restaurant, and a tourist information desk. It is a key venue for events like the Festival of the Dhow Countries, Sauti za Busara, and Zanzibar International Film Festivals.

Also known as the Arab Fort or Ngome Kongwe, it is located by the sea, near the House of Wonders and Forodhani Gardens, ideal for a combined visit. Originally a Portuguese fortress in the 17th century, it has evolved into a cultural centre. The fort frequently hosts events highlighting Zanzibar's arts, crafts, music, and traditions, offering live performances and art displays during your visit.

History of the Old Fort of Zanzibar

The Old Fort, constructed between 1698 and 1701 by the Busaidi Omani Arabs, is a significant historical site in Zanzibar. It was built after the Busaidi group took control of the island in 1698, ending almost two centuries of Portuguese rule. The fort served as a defence against both the Portuguese and the Mazrui, a rival Omani group occupying Mombasa.

Built on the grounds of an earlier Portuguese church (1598-1612), remnants of the old church can still be seen in the main courtyard. In the 19th century, the fort functioned as a prison, and the term "gereza," meaning prison in Swahili, is thought to come from the Portuguese word "ireja," meaning church.

Over time, the fort had various uses, including being a depot for the railway line to Bububu in the early 20th century. In 1949, it became a ladies' tennis club but fell into disuse after the 1964 Revolution. Today, the Old Fort has been renovated and is open to visitors, preserving its rich historical past.
