Mihintale Peak, Vavuniya Overview

Locals believe the mountain peak of Mihintale to be the meeting point of the Buddhist monk Mahinda and King Devanampiyatissa, inaugurating Buddhism in the country. The peak is 12 kilometres to the east of Anuradhapura, around an hour away from Vavuniya. The way up the peak is lined with ruins, including the ruins of a hospital at the base, as well as the ruins of a monastery. On the topmost part is the ancient circular stupa of Kantaka Cetiya, as well as the remains of a refectory. Mihintale is a Buddhist site of pilgrimage.
