The city of Sur is well-known for upholding its rich maritime heritage as a contributing factor to the significant Omani roles played during the maritime navigation in the past years. As a means of passing on these historical incidents from generation to generation, the Maritime Museum was built in Wilayat and stands strong till date.
Established in 1987, this museum has since been a fascinating local spot for tourists as well. The Maritime Museum houses different sections, with the dignified Wilayat emblem ‘Al Ghanja Ship’ adorning the entrance. Displaying Omani ships, along with photographs of sailors, makers of ships, ports, and of Sur itself, the Maritime Museum also holds a section for tableware and pottery. Since the museum is not very large, it should not take more than an hour to explore this beautiful place and immerse in its rich heritage and history.
