Rainbow Falls, San Francisco Overview

Fringed within the boundaries of Devils Postpile National Monument, Rainbow Falls finds its watercourse in the San Joaquin River of Madera County, California. The waterfalls, which is the highest in California's Sierra Nevada Mountains, with an approximate length of 101 feet, is reputed for its rainbow display on a mixture of foggy and sunny days.

Once a part of the Yosemite National Park, it went through intense episodes of lava eruption and a subject of the subsequent mining interests. However, with the aid of the Sierra Club, the area was declared a National monument in 1911. The cliffs that surround Rainbow Falls are composed of rocks which have been identified as platy rhyodacite which further leads to erosion and water undercutting.
The upside-down Rainbow Falls Trail follows a hike of 1.3 miles which could be started off from any of the trailheads by Red’s Meadow Pack Station and lead to two picturesque overlooks.
