Dvigrad Ruins, Rovinj Overview

Dvigrad Ruins is an abandoned medieval town right in the heart of Istria, not too far from Porec and Rovinj. The word Dvigard means ‘two towns’ and is situated in the Draga Valley. Dvigard Ruins were declared a cultural heritage site in 1997. Most prominent site is its church.

Recent investigations and excavations have brought to life interesting facts and figures about life in the middle ages. It is said to have had over 1000 inhabitants back in its jubilant days and though never destroyed it was abandoned around the 17th century. One of the most prominent sites amidst its ruins is that of the St. Sofia Church, which still towers at the highest point of the then-thriving village. This 3-nave basilica church dates back to the 13th century but its origins are said to be somewhere near the 5th century. A perfect region for a solitary retreat, you will definitely get all the time travel vibes from this place that once was the centre of authority and social activities. The best way to explore the ruins of Dvigard is by venturing into its walls and lanes all by yourself and getting lost in the time its objects take you back to.
