Asbyrgi Canyon , Reykjavik Overview

Asbyrgi is a glacial canyon and forest found to the north of Iceland. A certain part of the Diamond Circle is Asbyrgi Canyon. Apart from the usual sightseeing, one can even engage in different adventurous activities such as hiking and camping. It is home to camping grounds called Jökulsárgljúfur.

The horse-shaped canyon is often considered an amusing aspect for many tourists. Hence, many tourists prefer to visit this attraction since its closely connected to nature and provide adventure-oriented activities as well. 


Several foreign tree species were introduced, including spruce, larch and pine between 1947 and 1977. More than half of its length, the canyon is bisected through the middle by a unique rock formation named Eyjan (“The Island”) from where hikers can enjoy magnificent views. The sides of the canyons are specifically intriguing to see as one can observe how Iceland’s bedrock is formed of innumerable layers of lava.
