Ranni is a quaint hill station in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. It is an up-and-coming tourist destination and rests quietly on either side of river Pampa. Ranni has grown to become a hub of history, pilgrimage, natural beauty, and politics. Ranni has a 5000-year-old history and shares Kerala's diverse religious and spiritual history. It is not only very close to the Hindu Sabrimala Temple, built 2000 years ago, attracting lakhs of pilgrims every year, but also houses one of the earliest churches of the region, the St. Thomas Orthodox Church.

Not only that, Ranni is home to some gorgeous waterfalls- Perumthenaruvi and Aruvikuzhi waterfalls being some of them. The former is 17 kms from Ranni, and flows at the height of 100 meters, while the Aruvikuzhi waterfalls (11kms from Ranni) are considered one of the most well-hidden secrets of the place - it's gushing flow is regenerated every year during monsoon season. Both are fine picnic spots to enjoy and chill with family and friends. For trekking opportunities, travellers can visit the Charalkunnu hill, about 13 kms from Ranni, to trek and hike. Ranni, interestingly, is also one of the most literate districts in India, with a 95% literacy rate.

Places to Visit

Ranni is known for its natural beauty, but you should, for sure visit the Perumthenaruvi and Aruvikuzhi waterfalls, which are 17 kms and 11 kms away from Ranni respectively. These are excellent places to spend an evening with your family and friends. Be sure to take a small picnic, but do clean up after yourself to preserve the beauty of these falls.
Along with these, Ranni also offers a glance into the spiritual and religious world. Be sure to visit the Sabrimala Temple, which is 66 kms away from Ranni. It is a beautiful temple atop a hill, where the principal deity if Lord Ayyapa. The temple has some strict rules, ensure to follow them. You can also visit the First Church in the region, established in 1905 - the St. Thomas Orthodox Church. It is the oldest and most beautiful of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.

Ranni History

With over 5000 years of history, the small taluk of Ranni has evolved into a beautiful hill station. The region was first settled, it is believed to be inhabited by the Adi Dravidians around the Nilakkal forest and the Sabrimala hill.
The Sabrimala Hill houses one of the oldest temples of Kerela, the Sabrimala Temple. Later on, in the 18th century, it saw the coming of Knanaya Christians who migrated from Kallissery and then established the church, St. Thomas Church of Ranni. It was later visited by Dr Claudius Buchanan, a famous Scottish evangelical missionary.

  • It is essential to carry weather-appropriate clothes and accessories, such as cotton clothes, umbrellas, sunscreens and sunglasses.
  • As the weather is slightly unpredictable, and rainfall is heavy, be sure also to carry mosquito and bug repellents.
  • Because it is an up-and-coming hill station, lodging prices as of now are not very high, and accommodations are decent with all necessary amenities.
  • However, transportation is an issue, so make sure that you either pre-book buses or hire a local taxi to take you in and around Ranni.
  • The idol at the Sabrimala Temple is perceived to be a celibate God, hence women aged 16 to 50 years are not allowed within the vicinity of the idol.
  • Do wear appropriate clothing when visiting the temple.
  • There is no entry fee for the temple, and it is open from 5:00 AM to 10:30 PM every day.
