100 Waterfalls, Nong Khiaw Overview

100 Waterfalls is a cascade of beautiful natural waterfall located close to Ban Don Khoun village in Nong Khiaw city in Laos. It is one of the famous waterfalls in the region among the tourists known for its scenic location amidst deep jungles surrounded by the mountains. It is worth planning a day trip to 100 waterfalls to enjoy beautiful nature, unwind and swim in the falls.

The full-day hike to the waterfall starts with a boat ride to the village. You'll pass through scenic landscapes comprising of green rice fields, communities, and limestone mountains, which lead to the trail. An uphill climb takes you through a cascade of waterfalls, before reaching the top of the 100 waterfalls. You can picnic near the falls, admire the views of the region from many viewpoints, swim and relax after a challenging trek.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit 100 Waterfalls is during the rainy season between August and November when water levels are at their best. If you want to hike to the bottom of the falls, visit from October onwards when the rains subside.

Tips

  • It is best to avoid hiking if you are visiting during the rainy season. 
  • It is almost a full-day hike and involves climbing for about 1 or 2 hours and another hour or so of descent amidst muddy, uneven hills. It’s not a very difficult hike, but nevertheless requires a decent amount of fitness levels.
  • There are a few options for food and drinks in restaurants and cafes near the falls, which are expensive. It is better to carry your food and picnic.
  • There are no public toilets and ATMs near the waterfalls. It is recommended to carry some cash.
  • Carry umbrellas, spare clothes to change into if you plan to swim and good hiking shoes if you plan to trek to the bottom of the waterfalls. 
  • The path is slippery and dangerous, so be cautious of your steps. It is better to start early to make your way back before sunset.
