Elephant Lake , Munnar Overview

However, the highlight of the lake is the numerous herds of elephants who visit here from the forests of Munnar to quench their thirst from the water of the lake. Things to Do at Elephant Lake

1. Tata Tea Estate

Tata Tea Estate is located in close vicinity of the Elephant Lake. After you are done exploring and admiring the beautiful lake, you can proceed to take a walk in the pristine green plantations of the Tea Estate. You can watch the tea plantations, pickers at work and volunteer to help. You can even taste some of their premium quality tea and even buy some to take back home with you.

2. Anayirangal Dam

The lake also has a dam which was constructed for water conservation. Until recently, the dam was neglected but lately with the booming tourism industry, the area around the dam has been beautified and it attracts a lot of tourists who come here to soak in the serenity of the place.

3. Coracle Ride

A coracle is a small round boat made out of bamboo. Coracle Rides are especially popular in Munnar and you can experience one at the Elephant Lake itself. Enveloped in lush green tea estates and mighty hills in the backdrop, floating on top of clear blue water and watching herds of elephants pass by is one of the most amazing experiences to have in life. A 30 minutes ride typically costs INR 800- INR 1000 per person. The timing of the boat rides is 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

4. Photography

Another popular activity at the lake is photography. Many people including professional photographers visit here to capture the majestic elephants in their everyday activity. Besides, the area has abundant natural beauty and picture perfect landscapes.

5. Interact with the Local Tribes

Many local tribesmen reside near the Elephant Lake. You can venture to explore the local lifestyle and culture of these tribes. You can even taste the authentic cuisine and buy handicrafts that are handcrafted and produced by these tribesmen.

6. Amusement Park

There is also an amusement park near the Elephant Lake which is replete with swings and slides for the kids. You can relax and rewind in the park amidst shady trees and blooming shrubs and plants. You will have to buy tickets for entry into the park. The tickets are priced at minimal rates.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the Elephant Lake is after the monsoon rains have receded. During monsoons, the water level may rise up disabling any water activity including coracle rides etc. However, after the rains have stopped, the vegetation is in full bloom and you can enjoy the scintillating beauty at the place. Therefore, the most suitable time to visit the lake is between the months of September to January.

How to Reach

The nearest airport to the Elephant Lake is Cochin Airport which is at a distance of 110 kms. And the nearest railway station is in Aluva which is also at a distance of 110 kms from the Elephant Lake. If you are planning to travel by road, there are buses run by KSRTC that ply on a regular basis from the nearby cities to Munnar. From Munnar, you can travel in state run buses and public vehicles that can take you from Munnar to the Elephant Lake which is just 22 kms outside of town.
