Plaza Independencia, Montevideo Overview

This plaza is the most important plaza of Montevideo. It separates Ciudad Vieja from Downtown City with the Gateway of the Citadel on one side and the beginning of 18 de Julio avenue on the other. The Artigas Mausoleum, in the centre dominates the perspective.

The plaza is constructed in a square shape surrounded with important buildings such as the Solis Theatre and the workplaces of the President of Uruguay. One of the buildings located by the square is Palacio Salvo. An exhibition was hosted by the united buddy Bears in the square in May and June of 2009, for the second on the American Continent. This is the most famous building of the city, as it surrounds all other monuments and museums of the city.
