Poldi-Pezzoli Museum, Milan Overview

The Poldi-Pezzoli Museum has a collection composed of works by some of the greatest Renaissance artists, including Michelangelo, Filippo Lippi, Piero della Francesca, Bellini, Mantegna, Canaletto Raphael, Tiepolo and others. It is located on Via Manzoni 12, near Teatro alla Scala.

In addition, the Golden Room features some exceptional works like Lamentation over the Dead Christ with Saints by Botticelli and Ritratto di Giovane dama by Antonio Pollaiolo. Another highlight is the Armoury with its assemblage of various weapons and suits of armour. The museum houses over 5000 relics, porcelain, sculptures, furniture, artefacts and tapestries. Apart from the Golden Room and the Armoury, it flaunts Piero del Pollaiolo’s iconic Portrait of a Lady and Leonardo da Vinci's Litta Madonna. The room of clocks that Bruno Falk and Piero Portaluppi donated is another fascinating room. A section is also dedicated to the renowned Italian poet and philosopher Dante Alighieri.

The museum and palace's history

The museum houses a collection of art pieces curated by Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli. His passion for art was instilled by his mother, Rosa Trivulzio, the daughter of Prince Gian Giacomo Trivulzio. Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli also took part in the 1848 revolution, leading to him being exiled by the Austrian government. He was forced to move to other parts of Europe, where he met many international art collectors. Later, he returned to Milan and had his palace decorated beautifully. He died in 1879 and donated his palace and art collection to the Brera Academy. Then, in 1881, the Museo Poldi-Pezzoli was inaugurated. The museum suffered damages during WWⅡ, with some valuable paintings being destroyed. It was later rebuilt in 1951.
