Castillo de Gibralfaro, Malaga Overview

Castillo de Gibralfaro is a magnificent building that sits on the top of Mount Gibralfaro, and overlooks the port and the entire city of Malaga. Though the castle is almost in ruins now, it is a popular tourist spot because of its stunning panoramas and its historical value.

Dating back to the 10th century, the Castillo de Gibralfaro is one of the gems of the Moorish rule in the province. It is a Moorish fortress, built-in the 10th century by Abd-al-Rahman III, the Caliph of Cordoba. The fortress was enlarged by Yusef the First, the Sultan of Granada in the early 14th century. The image of this castle appears on the flag of Malaga and the flag of the province. From this castle, one can see the stretch of the Mediterranean coastline as well as the port of Malaga. The relics of the buildings show Islamic architecture, and the only visible remains of the fort include those old ramparts.
