Shrimanji Sahib Gurudwara

Alamgir, Ludhiana Overview

The village of Alamgir is situated around 10 km from the central city of Ludhiana. The highlight of this village is ShriManji Sahib Gurudwara, more commonly known as Alamgir Gurudwara. This place holds great significance in the historical background of Sikhism. The Gurudwara reflects yet another landmark in the life of the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh.

The backstory of this famous Sikh pilgrimage site is kind of interesting. The Guru Gobind Singh was pursued by the Mughal Army, and it was at this place where he paused and rested, blessing it with his presence. The langar hall of Shri Manji Sahib is among the biggest langar halls of all the Sikh shrines with the capacity to serve hundreds of people for free in one go.

Like all other Sikh pilgrimage sights, Alamgir Gurudwara offers top notch cleanliness and hygiene. Gurudwara Manji Sahib is a pilgrimage site as well as a tourist destination, both for its sacredness and the piece of Sikh history that it offers.

History of Alamgir

During the siege of Anandpur Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Sikh Guru, evaded Mughal and Rajput armies to enter Alamgir with the help of two pathan followers who risked their life for Guru Gobind Singh ji. They helped him escape by pretending to make him a sufi and changed his attire and appearance to fool the enemy. As a manji or a palanquin was used to disguise the appearance of the 10th Guru so that he could enter Alamgir, the Gurudwara came to be known as ShriManji Sahib Gurudwara. To this day, the original palanquin is preserved in an underground cell.
