Shilloi Lake, Kohima Overview

A beautiful foot shaped lake in the heart of the Patkai range of Nagaland, Shilloi Lake is a very picturesque destination with verdant valley surrounding it from all sides. The lake is considered very important by the folks of Latsum village as it is believed that the spirit of a holy child rests in the bottom of the lake. It is one of the reasons why no one fishes or uses the lake water for drinking and irrigation.

In the beautiful and calm surroundings of the Patkai Range in the easternmost corner of Nagaland is situated a small and exquisite lake known as Shilloi. Shilloi Lake is shaped in the form of a human foot and is about four meters deep.

Shilloi Lake can be visited any time of the year as the weather in the Naga Hills is pleasant all times except for the nights which can be chilly. One will need some woolens for the night. In case you are traveling during winters you will be require to cover yourself adequately.

One can move about the region by car and or on foot.

There are few tourists cabins built by the Department of Tourism of Nagaland for guests which can be used for staying but one needs to advance book. There is no facility for cooking one has to bring one's own ration and use firewood for cooking. In case you are just making an excursion than Kohima should be your preferred destination for staying. The city has many option for accommodation for all budget sizes.

The Patkai range in which the lake is situated is surrounded by countless tales and spirits of Naga tribe's past. Being here you can experience the true culture and history of Nagaland's famed tribes.

Try some unique Naga cuisine like Dry Pork, Smoked Pork Stew, Bamboo Steamed Fish and Kongshia Lon among others.

The lake is best seen on a trip to Kohima. Leave early from Kohima and reach Shilloi Lake via Phek to spend the day here.

Leave early in the morning as the journey from Kohima till Shilloi will take lot of time due to the bad conditions of the road. Also carry lots of drinking water plus food for your journey as the possibility of finding eateries is minimal.

  • Air: Nearest air head is at Dimapur which is well connected by flights with Kolkata and Guwahati. Kohima is about 74 km from Dimapur and can be reached by hiring a taxi or catching a state bus for Kohima. From Kohima you can easily get a cab or a bus for Phek district where Shilloi Lake is situated.

  • Rail: Nearest rail head is at Dimapur which is connected to other major cities of North-East and the country. From Dimapur one can easily hire a cab till Shilloi Lake or take a bus till Kohima and take a connecting bus for Phek district.

  • Road: Shilloi Lake lies on the Zunheboto-Kiphere road which is a nice stretch into the Naga Hills. Buses ply regularly from Kohima towards Phek district. One can also make the 275 km long journey by hiring a cab in Kohima which is a better option allowing you take in the wonderful scenery.
