Morgan House, Kalimpong Overview

Mr and Mrs Morgan created the Morgan House in the 1930s which is an archetypal example of colonial architecture in Kalimpong which is present in the district of Darjeeling in West Bengal. The Morgan House is also known as the 'Haunted House'. However, it is now under the administration of the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation Ltd and has been converted into a lodge for tourists. Exuding an aura of mystery and regality, the Morgan House Lodge is a charming tourist spot. Located well within reach of the railway station, this destination lies right in the lap of nature. The surrounding landscape of gently undulating hillocks and beautiful coniferous trees make it an enchanting destination worthy of a visit. 

Overlooking the mesmerizing landscapes of Kalimpong, the Morgan House is the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate your spirits. The atmosphere of this lodge is quite cosy, and the staff here is also warm and friendly. You can enjoy freshly prepared meals here which are not only delicious but are also authentic to the palate. Go for a walk amidst the serene landscape that surrounds the lodge, and you can experience the natural vegetation of this destination here firsthand. Morgan House is situated on the sixteenth-acre estate on top of the Durpindara Mountain. It lies at a distance of 3 km from the town of Kalimpong and gives a clear view of the Kangchenjunga range. Kalimpong cantonment area surrounds the mansion and provides a view of the Relli, Kapher, Deolo as well as Labha valleys.

Morgan House has a thrilling tale associated with it, as locals believe this place to be haunted. Legend says that this house was built by George Morgan in the 1930s, who lived in the home until the death of Lady Morgan. Some people believe that the manor is still haunted by the spirit of the lady. Some people have reported hearing sounds of high heels clicking against the wooden passage of the hotel. These urban legends only make a stay over here more exciting and thrilling and should be experienced once.

This property has used a spot for summer breakaway where lavish parties were organized. It then went into the hands of the trustees after the death of Mr and Mrs Morgan. Then, the property was handed over to the Indian Government after India gained independence. Under the governance of Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, a collective decision was taken to convert the house into a government rest house. However, after the death of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, the property was finally handed over to the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation.

Many celebrities including Amit Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Nargis and Om Prakash have visited the lodge and stayed here. Their testimonials have been taken and framed in the lounge of the mansion.

The ideal time to pay a visit to the Morgan House is from March to June and September to December. Since during this time, the weather is pleasant and pretty comfortable, it is easier to enjoy the place. 

Morgan House lies opposite to the Army Golf Club on the way to Durpin Monastery in West Kalimpong in the district of Darjeeling. Tourists can hire the regular car service from Kalimpong market which goes up till the Durpin Monastery and beside the Morgan House.
