Morgan House, Kalimpong Overview

Located in the verdant greens of Kalimpong, Morgan House is a mansion built by Mr. and Mrs. Morgan in the 1930s. It is an archetypal example of colonial architecture in Kalimpong. What makes visiting this gorgeous piece of construction even better is that it is surrounded by legends of it being Haunted! It has been converted into a lodge for tourists and is under the administration of the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation. Located near the New Jalpaiguri Railway Station, this destination lies right in the lap of nature and is easily accessible as well. The undulating hillocks, colorful sunsets, and a the charm of an old colonial town surround you as you make Morgan House your home.

Morgan House is situated on the sixteenth-acre estate on top of the Durpindara Mountain. It lies at a distance of 3 km from the town of Kalimpong and gives a clear view of the Kangchenjunga range. Kalimpong cantonment area surrounds the mansion and provides a view of the Relli, Kapher, Deolo as well as Labha valleys.

Legend of Haunted Morgan House

Morgan House has a thrilling tale associated with it, as locals believe this place to be haunted. Legend says that this house was built by George Morgan in the 1930s, who lived in the home until the death of Lady Morgan. Some people believe that the manor is still haunted by the spirit of the lady. Some people have reported hearing sounds of high heels clicking against the wooden passage of the hotel. These urban legends only make a stay over here more exciting and thrilling and should be experienced once.

This property has used a spot for summer breakaway where lavish parties were organized. It then went into the hands of the trustees after the death of MrÂ and MrsÂ Morgan. Then, the property was handed over to the Indian Government after India gained independence. Under the governance of Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, a collective decision was taken to convert the house into a government rest house. However, after the death of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, the property was finally handed over to the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation.

Many celebrities including Amit Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Nargis and Om Prakash have visited the lodge and stayed here. Their testimonials have been taken and framed in the lounge of the mansion.

How To Reach Morgan House

Morgan House lies opposite to the Army Golf Club on the way to Durpin Monastery in West Kalimpong in the district of Darjeeling. Tourists can hire the regular car service from Kalimpong market which goes up till the Durpin Monastery and beside the Morgan House.
