Located about a 45-minute drive from Munnar (or roughly 2 hours from Idukki), Eravikulam National Park is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also known as Rajamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, it was managed as a game reserve by the Kanan Devan Hills Produce Company before 1971, when control passed to the Kerala Government; it was declared a national park in 1978. Species found here include elephants, Nilgiri langur, Nilgiri marten, the Atlas moth (the largest moth in the world), lion-tailed macaque, small-clawed otter, and occasionally a tiger or leopard. The park is closed annually from February 1 to March 31 for the Nilgiri tahr calving season.
