History

The Otago Railway trailed from the South Island Main Trunk at Wingatui 12 kilometers south of Dunedin, through Middlemarch, Ranfurly, Omakau and Alexandra to Cromwell in the heart of Central Otago, 235 km from the Junction.

This route was proposed with seven other and was chosen for it offered the widest coverage of the Crown Lands, had very less uneven terrain that might have caused hindrance to set up the rail tracks and was also the most direct route to Dunedin.

By the late 29th century, when Otago became a key trade attraction during its Goldrush, the railways were primarily set for commercial purposess and transp[sorting of goods. It was only after several decades that the railways switched to cater to touring and public transport.
