Long Beach, Dunedin Overview

Long Beach, also known as Warauwerawera, is located in Dunedin along the coastline of Otago and is known for its beautiful shores, the multiple rock formations and the cave sites in the region. Tourists enjoy various outdoor activities like rock climbing, camping, swimming etc., making the location perfect for a day visit. The caves at Long Beach are also known for being home to a lot of native wildlife which can be explored, such as the Blue Penguins, seals, terns, pukeko, herons, spoonbills, and ducks.

The locality does not have more than 100 homes, and the Beach does not stretch for more than 2.5 kilometres, making it a tranquil location for a peaceful day out. The Beach is also known as the filming site for Out of the Blue. In addition, Long Beach lies close to the small settlements of Purakaunui and Aramoana, which tourists can also visit if the trip extends by a day or so.

  • Long Beach lies at a distance of around 15 kilometers north east to the city centre, between the mouth of the Otago Harbour and the Blueskin Bay and visitors can reach the location by both private and public modes of transportation.
  • Tourists who choose to go by private vehicles or by rented cars can choose the route that leads to Port Chalmers and take a left turn, from which point they will find signs that lead the tourists towards Long Beach.
  • Visitors can also choose to board buses that head to Purakaunui, which lies fairly close to Long Beach.
