Dar es Salaam War Cemetery, Dar-Es-Salaam Overview

The Dar es Salaam War Cemetery in Tanzania is a quiet place honouring soldiers who died in World War I and II. It's located on the east side of Bagamoyo Road, about five kilometres from downtown Dar es Salaam. The cemetery holds more than 1,800 graves of soldiers from Britain, India, South Africa, and East Africa, reminding us of the wide-reaching effects of war.

The cemetery was set up in 1958 to remember the sacrifices made during World War I and II for freedom and peace. Managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, every grave has the soldier's name, regiment, unit, and date of death, keeping their memory alive. The calm surroundings welcome visitors to think and honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who served their nations.

History of Dar es Salaam War Cemetery

The Dar es Salaam War Cemetery has significant historical importance from both World War I and II. It started in 1968 because 660 graves from the Dar es Salaam (Ocean Road) Cemetery had to move for a new road. These graves were put in collective plots with screen wall memorials.

In the early 1970s, another 1,000 graves were moved to the cemetery from different places in Tanzania to make sure they were taken care of properly. Nowadays, the cemetery holds 1,764 Commonwealth soldiers from World War I, including 60 unknown soldiers, and 41 from World War II, with seven unidentified. There are also 112 graves of soldiers from other countries, mostly from Belgium and Germany, dating back to World War I.

Besides the Commonwealth graves, the cemetery also has the Dar es Salaam Hindu Cremation Memorial, remembering 14 Indian soldiers, and the Dar es Salaam British and Indian Memorial. This memorial honours over 1,500 officers and men who died in East Africa during and after January 1917, without known graves. It was moved from another location in the township.
