Palace Gate , Bordeaux Overview

Palace Gate is the historic and pivotal gate of the city of Bordeaux. This gate facilitated an entrance to the city as well as safeguarding it. The gates portray Gothic and Renaissance architectural designs through mullioned windows, turrets, canopies and fleur-de-lis.

The gate was rehabilitated between 1880 and 1890 by the architect Charles Durand. Port Calihau has been declared as a Historic Monument since May 28, 1883. It is accessible to the public and displays an exhibition on the first level which showcases the size of the stone, materials and the equipments used to construct the city. The establishment of this gate began in 1493 and was completed in 1495. This gate was dedicated to King Charles VII after his triumph at the Battle of Fornovo. At that time, the gate served as a direct entry to the Palais de l'Ombrière, which was home to the Duke of Guyenne.

A noteworthy feature of the structure is the theatrical scene which includes two angels and a shield of three fleurs-de-lis. It is situated in the middle of a capital that is also ornamented with the same flowers on the right side of the facade facing the docks. If looked at closely, one can even notice some traces of the city’s old walls. Also, inside the Palace Gate is an exhibition that elaborates on the architecture of the gate. From the top of the gate, one can get incredible views of the city and Garonne.
